After reading this article, you will learn five ways to make money writing online in Nigeria and the most profitable among them so that you don’t waste time running after peanuts.
There are so many people who love writing and would really love to write for a living but don’t know how to do it… so they give up and get a job even though they know they don’t like it.
On the other hand, there are those who are stubborn… they don’t know how it will work for them yet but they have not given up… they are still looking for ways to make money writing from home right here in Nigeria and that is exactly why I wrote this article – to show you how you can get started speedily.
Read it and make sure you share it with your friends on social media so that someone can learn and get started.
Are you ready to make money writing?
Let’s get to it.
Freelancing simply refers to deploying your skills to create content for other people whether they be authors, bloggers, magazine companies, media houses etc. for a one off payment.
The moment you hand over the written content; you cease to have any ownership rights to it.
This is a good place to start if you’re desperately looking to make money online with your writing skill but it can quickly become boring especially if you’re writing about subjects you have little to no interest in.
Here’s a look at what the few days I invested in freelancing back in 2016 fetched me; I didn’t commit to it because it was a side hustle for me.
To get started freelancing, take time to first build an online portfolio that has samples of your articles so that when you’re pitching for a job, you can easily refer people to check out your portfolio.
You can get a portfolio by signing up with free blog platforms like blogger.com or wordpress.com and write 3 – 10 articles there so that when people go there and see your articles, they can get a feel of your articles and decide whether they want you to write for them.
Here are a few examples of freelance websites that you can join and bid for writing jobs;
Here’s a screenshot of the writing and translation services section of fiverr…
And here’s a screenshot of what services people are offering under the “article writing” section…
Other freelance sites include http://freelancer.com and http://upwork.com.
So these are platforms you can go on, sign up and start bidding for writing jobs.
However, my reservation about this method of writing is that you’ll still be trading time for money.
Thus, what you have is just another job. Sometimes, this job can be more tedious because you’re always working to meet clients’ needs.
Blogging is another way you can make money writing online.
How do you go about this?
You create a blog where you post content for a group of people.
It can be any kind of content.
Lifestyle, gossip, news or more specialized content like business ideas, startup ideas, self-help tips, personal development, relationship or even spiritual development.
Any of these categories is a good category to create content around then you attract people who have interest in this subject.
Now, as you build your audience, the goal is to make money writing so you need to monetize your platform and there are a number of ways you can make money blogging right here in Nigeria and I’ll share five with you here.
So how do you do this?
- By selling digital products related to the subject of your blog to your readers
- By selling paid advert space or sponsored posts on your blog
- You can get paid to blog for companies, where companies pay you to create content for them consistently
- You can make money by offering services to your blog readers for example if you write about business startup, you can offer a service to help people write business plans
- You can make money from your blog by organizing virtual and physical events for your readers
Blogging is a very profitable way to make money writing especially because it allows you to generate multiple streams of income from your blog. However, it is important to note that blogging takes time to build and start making money. Some people have had to stay
3. Transcription Services
I separated this from freelancing because you can either be hired as a full time transcriptionist or work on a freelance basis.
What this entails is that you get audio content like interviews for example, listen to every word and type every word spoken in the interview into a written text format.
That way, it can be modified and used in magazines and other kinds of materials that require written content.
You can offer transcription services to content creators who frequently produce video and audio content.
Transcriptionists typically charge more than regular article writers. This is because transcribing can be a very daunting task.
4. Digital Publishing
This is where you write e-books both fiction and/or non-fiction and you sell them using online platforms like Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble, OkadaBooks and other retailers or if you have the resources to do so, build your own site and sell them from your own platform.
If you have a Facebook account, you can also use it to sell your Digital Books. My guide titled Social Media for Impact and Profit, I share a simple process you can use to sell your products and services on Facebook and get people to buy from you.
This is definitely one way you can explore if you like to make money repeatedly from your work rather than just getting paid once and most likely never get any credit for.
However, while this is an inexpensive way to get into the digital publishing business, it will take a significant amount of time for you to make any significant sum from it especially if you’re selling on the third party platforms.
Now let’s get to the most exciting method I like to use when it comes to making money writing online…
5. Information Marketing
This is my most preferred form of deploring my writing skills to make money and I’ll tell you why in a moment.
First, because I like helping people and then also I like the fact that I can create digital products and earn passively from those products.
For example, an ebook I created about a year ago still makes me money.
And guess what?
Instead of the price reducing… I have doubled the price without changing a single word in the guide. (see this picture below)
How’s that for a passive income stream that grows?
So, how do you go about this?
Just three steps.
Look out for problems that people have and are actively seeking information to solve and are willing to pay for this information.
Create content that helps the people solve this this problem and package it in form of an eBook. Just type it neatly in Microsoft word format and save it as PDF. That’s all.
Sell it to them.
Anytime someone makes a payment for your eBook, ask for their email and send it to them.
Some people will even request that you send it to them on WhatsApp.
It’s really that simple.
The bulk of the job here is to look out for what people are interested in and willing to pay you so that you don’t create a product nobody wants to buy.
For example, this guide you’re reading right now answers the question how to make money writing. It shows you five ways you can make money writing.
Think about it for a moment… I could have easily taken this guide, add a little more content and I have a new eBook ready for sale.
If I sell only 100 copies of this guide at N1,000 how much is that? That will be a cool N100,000.
And I could sell 1,000 copies with a decent advertising.
That’s why I highly recommend information marketing as a business model of choice for anyone who wants to make a living and become a trusted authority in their industry.
You don’t have to keep struggling to get a new client each time as in the freelance or transcription service option or keep writing fresh content each and every time to get fresh traffic coming in.
You do the hard work once and you get paid every time you make a new sale… It’s really that simple.
And you determine how much you make.
Here’s an example…
If I wanted to make N300,000 right now all I have to do is figure out a way to sell a N3,000 eBook to 100 people and I’m good.
See how that works?
